Route Overview
Experience one of Tanzania’s most rewarding mountain adventures on this 3 Day Mount Meru Trek, a challenging yet unforgettable journey to the summit of Socialist Peak (4,566 m / 14,980 ft). Located within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers an exceptional combination of wildlife, spectacular scenery, and diverse ecosystems, making it one of East Africa’s finest trekking destinations.
Unlike many mountain climbs, the trek begins in the heart of a national park where hikers are accompanied by an armed park ranger through forests inhabited by giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, colobus monkeys, and numerous bird species. As the trail ascends, the landscape transforms from dense montane forest to giant heath, alpine meadows, rocky volcanic terrain, and the dramatic crater rim leading to the summit.
The highlight of the trek is the exhilarating midnight ascent to Socialist Peak, where you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise illuminating Mount Kilimanjaro, the Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and the vast plains of Northern Tanzania.
Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Momella Gate (1,500 m) – Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m)
After an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha, drive to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park to complete registration before beginning your trek. Accompanied by an armed park ranger, hike through lush montane forests where wildlife sightings are common. Along the trail, keep watch for giraffes, buffaloes, bushbucks, warthogs, black and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a wide variety of colorful bird species.
The trail gradually ascends through beautiful forest landscapes, passing waterfalls, giant fig trees, and open clearings while your guide shares fascinating information about the mountain’s ecology and wildlife.
After approximately 4 to 6 hours of trekking, arrive at Miriakamba Hut, where you can relax, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next day’s ascent.

Mountain Experience
Mount Meru is one of the few mountains in Africa where the trek begins with outstanding wildlife viewing, offering a unique combination of safari and mountain adventure.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m) – Saddle Hut (3,570 m)
After breakfast, continue your ascent as the dense forest gradually gives way to giant heather, open moorland, and volcanic terrain.
The trail becomes steeper, offering magnificent views of the Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and the surrounding plains. As you gain altitude, you’ll notice changing vegetation and cooler temperatures while enjoying increasingly spectacular panoramic scenery.
Arrive at Saddle Hut in the early afternoon and enjoy lunch before taking an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m). This short climb not only helps with acclimatization but also rewards trekkers with breathtaking sunset views over Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape.
Return to Saddle Hut for an early dinner and rest before your midnight summit attempt.

Mountain Experience
The optional hike to Little Meru is strongly recommended, providing valuable acclimatization while offering some of the best panoramic views on the mountain.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Summit Socialist Peak (4,566 m) – Momella Gate – Arusha
Around midnight, begin your summit ascent under a sky filled with stars. Equipped with headlamps, climb steadily along the spectacular crater rim, passing Rhino Point and Cobra Point as you make your way toward the summit.
Reach Socialist Peak (4,566 m) at sunrise, where you’ll be rewarded with unforgettable views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Meru Crater, Ash Cone, the Great Rift Valley, and the vast plains stretching across Northern Tanzania.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, descend carefully to Saddle Hut for a well deserved breakfast before continuing down through Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate.
Upon arrival, receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Arusha, where your unforgettable Mount Meru trekking adventure comes to an end.
