Route Overview
Embark on an exciting 4 Day Mount Meru Trek, one of Tanzania’s most scenic and rewarding mountain adventures. Rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), Mount Meru is located within Arusha National Park and offers an incredible combination of wildlife, diverse landscapes, and breathtaking panoramic views.
Often considered the perfect acclimatization climb before tackling Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru provides a quieter and less crowded trekking experience while still offering a challenging summit ascent. The trail passes through dense montane forests inhabited by giraffes, buffaloes, colobus monkeys, and numerous bird species before climbing into heathlands, alpine deserts, and rocky volcanic terrain.
One of the highlights of the trek is the exhilarating pre dawn summit climb along the crater rim to Socialist Peak, where you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise with unforgettable views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Great Rift Valley, and the surrounding plains of Northern Tanzania.
Throughout the trek, you’ll be accompanied by experienced mountain guides, armed park rangers, and a dedicated support team of porters and cooks who ensure a safe, enjoyable, and memorable trekking experience.
Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by your trekking representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha.
After check-in, relax and recover from your journey. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore the hotel surroundings or simply prepare for the adventure ahead.
In the evening, meet your mountain guide for a comprehensive trek briefing. Your guide will explain the trekking schedule, equipment requirements, altitude precautions, safety procedures, and answer any questions before your climb begins.

Meals: Dinner
Day 2: Arusha – Momella Gate (1,500 m) Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m)
After an early breakfast, drive to Arusha National Park and complete registration at Momella Gate before beginning your trek.
Accompanied by an armed park ranger, hike through lush montane forests where wildlife sightings are common. Keep an eye out for giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, bushbucks, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of colorful bird species.
The trail gradually climbs through beautiful forest scenery, passing waterfalls, giant fig trees, and open clearings before reaching Miriakamba Hut, where you’ll enjoy dinner and your first night on the mountain.

Mountain Experience
Today’s trek offers a unique combination of hiking and wildlife viewing, making Mount Meru one of the few mountains in Africa where large mammals can be seen on foot.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut (3,570 m)
After breakfast, continue your ascent through the forest before emerging into open heathland and alpine vegetation.
The trail becomes steeper as you climb through giant heather, volcanic ridges, and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Meru Crater and Ash Cone. As the elevation increases, enjoy breathtaking views across Arusha National Park and, on clear days, the distant summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Arrive at Saddle Hut in the early afternoon, where you’ll have lunch and time to rest before an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m). This short excursion helps your body adjust to the altitude while offering stunning sunset views.
Return to Saddle Hut for an early dinner and prepare for the midnight summit ascent.

Mountain Experience
The optional hike to Little Meru is highly recommended as it improves acclimatization and rewards trekkers with spectacular panoramic views.

Day 4: Summit Socialist Peak (4,566 m) – Momella Gate – Departure
Around midnight, begin your challenging summit ascent with headlamps under the star filled African sky.
Climb steadily along the dramatic crater rim toward Socialist Peak (4,566 m), passing landmarks such as Rhino Point and Cobra Point. Reach the summit at sunrise, where breathtaking views stretch across Mount Kilimanjaro, the Great Rift Valley, Meru Crater, Ash Cone, and the surrounding plains.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, descend back to Saddle Hut for a well deserved breakfast before continuing the descent through Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate.
Upon arrival at the gate, receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Arusha or directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward journey.
